An Kindness of People We Don't Know: How a Person I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Secure the Job That Changed My Life

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a friend. Since my companion was considering pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had planned a fortnight visit there on the way to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a sizeable ten-floor structure on the Manhattan's Upper West Side known as International House. Once we unpacked, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, sat down, and started talking to other diners.

Adjacent to my seat was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I did for a living, and I told him that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He recommended that I consider applying for a job with them. I laughed it off, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that evening. The Iraqi student came up to me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately informed my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a place where anything feels possible – she declared: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. A perk of the job was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his name, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the confidence or nerve to approach someone at an elite institution and seek a position. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that job in New York paved the way for a role in Europe where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I now have a family of four kids. That encounter altered everything. That benevolent individual set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
